3 Tips for Child Proofing Your Kitchen

No one wants to see their kid get hurt. Being a parent is tough because you are in a constant state of worry trying to make sure that your kids are protected from all the things that can harm them in this world. While there is always a chance of injury no matter what you do, there are several things that you can do to reduce the risks. If you have a young child or a new baby on the way then you will need to be sure to childproof your kitchen.
Here are 3 tips for making sure your kitchen is kid-friendly:
- Locks on the cabinets- If you are trying to move everything onto a higher shelf in your kitchen then sooner or later you’ll start to run out of room. Loosing space isn’t something that you should have to give in to. When you start to feel like you’re running out of space it is time for you to get some locks on your cabinets and drawers. There are several different types of child locks that you can get for your cupboards that will keep your kids out and save you the hassle of having to switch everything to a top shelf. You can even get all sorts of locks for your refrigerator as well as for other parts of your home.
- Keep things up high- Making your kitchen a space that is safe for your children requires that you keep a lot of your thing up high and out of the reach of your kids. Things like kitchen cleaners and detergents should stay on the top shelf so that none of the little ones can get ahold of them. You should also consider keeping all heavy things or electric appliances on higher shelves as they can cause injury as well.
- Loose appliances- When it comes to childproofing your kitchen you need to make sure that you keep loose appliances out of your child’s reach. Things like coffee makers and toasters are great examples of things you might not think to move. Not only do these items get really hot, but they can be quite heavy. Having one fall on your child or even having your child reach for one could result in serious injury. Rather than risk injury with these smaller, countertop appliances it is best to store them out of reach or within a locked cabinet.
Raising a kid is a lot of hard work, but with the right preparation you should be able to tackle any problems that life throws your way. There is no reason why you should have to worry about your child’s safety while they are at home, and childproofing your kitchen is a great way to help you feel safe.
