Playing in a Winter Wonderland the Inupiat Way

Now that the temperature has warmed up slightly, we are able to enjoy the snowy outdoors. Anneliese has always been an outdoorsy girl and, although it took some adjustment, she loves playing outside even in the arctic winter. Whenever we go out, she runs and plops down in the snow making snow angels.She also has had tons of fun sledding with mommy and daddy.

Toddlerhood: Surviving with a 2 Year Old

Life with a toddler is so crazy. I am amazed by all that she is learning and stressed by her temperamental outbursts. It is both scary and sweet when she starts copying everything that I do. Life is getting more complicated as we decide about preschool and playdates, while trying to break our own bad habits so she doesn’t pick them up. At the same time, we have to take her toddler tantrums and extreme energy one day at a time. It is exhausting but this time is precious.

Cabin Fever (and Our Toddler Playing on the Ice)

Winter time means cold weather and with that brings cabin fever. So far, we have been blessed with a very mild winter up here in the Alaskan arctic. One day we even had the temperature go above freezing! Whenever I chat with one of the local Inupiat natives, they say the weather feels like springtime.

Sleepy Toddler Video

Toddlers seem to have only two modes; either you can’t keep up with them or you can’t keep they awake. There is something about seeing a sleeping child that makes everyone smile- toddlers and babies look so precious when they are sleeping. I love to watch Anneliese sleep but watching her try to stay awake can be fun too. I think this video of my toddler trying to stay awake while eating is hilarious.

Keeping Warm in the Arctic Winter

The first day of winter has come but cold temperatures are nothing new for us up here in the arctic. It has been below zero for the past month already. Some days, when the Siberian winds are blowing at 30-40 mph, the wind chill makes the temperature feel like it’s -50 degrees (Fahrenheit).

(November 17, 2012) Kotzebue, Alaska- 33 miles above the Arctic Circle. We live on this small spit of land that juts out into the Kotzebue Sound, which is connected to the Chukchi Sea.
